Monterey Bay Aquarium Live

The Monterey Bay Cam is on right now. You can hear great sound effects of the beach with live updates on what’s happening now!

During our deepest, darkest sleep overnight, the gentle beach can be heard. There are intermittent swirls of sand and water at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It’s heard in the background and seen with lights shimmering on the gentle waves for hours in the dark.

The peaceful gentle waves sooth our minds in the twighlight — then it’s daybreak.

The sun stretches up into the sky. In a distance, barking sea lions and basking sea otters appear and are suddenly heard. Fishing boats pass by for fish or go on a whale watching tour.

Monterey Bay is about 25 miles wide with the vast Monterey Canyon beneath.. The canyon starts just off Moss Landing, and twists and turns almost 250 miles (400 kilometers) out to sea. At its deepest point, it plunges to 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) deep — deeper than the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Explorers search the deep waters of Monterey Bay for animals — to learn about them and sometimes bring them back for public display at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A voyage to the deep sea may result in the discovery of jellies or sea stars for their Into the Deep exhibition. Each trip also presents an opportunity to gather data about the deep-sea environment and its residents — and sometimes make exciting discoveries.
